Nigerian Society of Engineers and Council for the Regulation of Engineers in Nigeria (COREN) has mourned one of its leaders, Charles Aniweta Mbanefo, describing him as an accomplished engineer.
Mbanifo passed away on October 27, 2022 at the age 81. He was the founding chairman of the Nigerian Society of Engineers Abuja branch. He served as the president of NSE between 1998 and 1999.
During his active years, Mbanefo supervised the construction of some major districts and monumental edifices in the Federal Capital Territory; and some of the projects in FCT that he participated in are: the Aso Villa, the National Assembly (design stage), the Supreme Court, the Federal Secretariat, the National Stadium, the National Mosque, the Transcorp Hilton, Maitama District, Garki II District, Jabi District (design stage), and many others.
Speaking at an evening of tributes in honour of Mbanefo, the president of NSE, Tasiu Sa’ad Gidari-Wudil, said the most endearing character traits that the late sage possessed were his humane disposition and uncommon humility. Adding that he was a father to all monitoring professionally, teaching wisdom, and yielding support to the weak.
He said, “Mbanefo was love by all for his strong benevolent spirit. He will be missed by all of us.”
Also paying his tribute, the president of the COREN, Ali Rabiu, described the late Mbanifo as thoughtful, intellectual, bold and strong.
Rabiu said Mbanefo had contributed immensely to the development of his profession and community.
On his part, the chairman of NSE Abuja Branch, Benjamin Okoh, said Mbanefo was a definition of virtue, an exceptional individual, infectiously witty and at the same time, profoundly caring, adding that he spoke for the voiceless.
He said Mbanefo shared Aristotelian view that “If a man is interested in himself only, he is very small, he is interested in his family, he is large, if he is interested in his community, he is large.”
