Justice Friday Ogazi of the Federal High Court in Lagos has convicted and sentenced a manager at a Netherlands-based freight company, John Komolafe, to 12 months in prison for smuggling illegal drugs into Nigeria.

Justice Ogazi jailed Komolafe after he pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of conspiracy and drug trafficking filed against him by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

During his arraignment, the prosecutor, Adekunle Adebajo, informed the court that the defendant was arrested on November 7, 2025, at the Customs Enforcement unit at Tincan Island Port, Apapa, Lagos State.

Adebajo also claimed that the defendant was found with 105.5 Kilograms of Molly and 500 grams of Methamphetamine, both psychotropic substances akin to cocaine, heroin, and LSD.

The defendant admitted to the court that he had been involved in this illegal activity for some time.

He stated that his employer from the Netherlands regularly sent such cargo for him to deliver.

Based on his guilty plea and confession, the prosecutor sought a conviction and appropriate sentencing after presenting evidence.

The defence counsel, Uche Okoronkwo, urged the court to show mercy, stating that his client is a victim of circumstances and urging for a non-custodial sentence.

After hearing both sides, Justice Ogazi sentenced Komolafe to 12 months in prison and ordered him to pay a fine of N1 million.

The judge, however, held that if he fails to pay the sum, he will serve an additional four months in a correctional facility.
