The crisis rocking the Oyo State Traditional Council seemed to have deepened as the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, was snubbed by the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Abdulrashidi Adewolu Akanmu Ladoja, at the 2026 Interfaith gathering held yesterday at The Secretariat, Grand Space, behind the Oyo State House of Assembly.

Alaafin, in a gesture of respect, stretched out his hand to greet Olubadan, but was met with a deliberate snub.

The Olubadan, after greeting Governor Oluseyi Makinde and other dignitaries, proceeded to his seat, ignoring the Alaafin’s outstretched hand.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with many condemning Alaafin’s actions as disrespectful and unacceptable.

One Ibadan son present at the event said, “Alaafin is very rude for making a move to shake the Olubadan of Ibadanland. Putting aside kingship, Olubadan is not his mate in all aspects.”

Many are questioning Alaafin’s judgment, given his seniority and position as a respected monarch. The incident has reignited concerns about the rift between traditional rulers in Oyo State and raised questions about the stability of the traditional institution.

The governor was present at the event but has not made a public comment on the incident. The Olubadan has also maintained silence on the matter.

Critics argue that Alaafin’s actions might have undermined the respect and dignity of the traditional institution.

The incident has sparked heated discussions on social media, with many calling for an explanation from the Alaafin.

As news of the incident spreads, many people have called for calm and urged both monarchs to resolve their differences peacefully.

The incident has sparked concerns about the implications for traditional governance and stability in Oyo State.
