The Federal High Court in Abuja is expected to continue hearing today, Friday, in the suit challenging the eligibility of former President Goodluck Jonathan to contest the 2027 presidential election.
The suit was instituted by lawyer Johnmary Jideobi, who is seeking an order restraining Jonathan from participating in the 2027 presidential race on constitutional grounds.
The plaintiff is asking the court to interpret provisions of the 1999 Constitution as amended, particularly regarding presidential tenure limits and whether Jonathan is qualified to seek office again after previously completing the tenure of late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and later serving a full elected term.
The matter had earlier come up before the court but was adjourned following the absence of some parties in the case.
The development has continued to generate political and legal debates across the country, especially as conversations around the 2027 general elections gather momentum.
Jonathan, who served as Nigeria’s President from 2010 to 2015, has not publicly declared interest in the 2027 presidential election.
Further details are expected to emerge from the court proceedings later today.
