The Cross River State Police Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit prevented a mob from lynching a suspected armed robber who allegedly tried to rob a lady in Calabar early Sunday, January 25, 2026.

The Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, in the Cross River State Command, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, confirmed this in Calabar yesterday during a media chat with LEADERSHIP on Sunday.

He stated that the police recovered a Beretta pistol with three live 9mm rounds of ammunition and arrested several individuals involved in the mob attack.

The suspect was beaten unconscious by the mob at Abangasang area, Mbora Street, Calabar.

The suspect was rushed to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital (UCTH) for medical attention.

Unfortunately, the victim, yet to be identified, was pronounced dead at the hospital in the early hours of Sunday.

Three suspects are currently in police custody and are assisting with the ongoing investigation. The victim’s body has been evacuated and deposited at the UCTH mortuary for preservation and autopsy.

A statement sighted by the Police PPRO sighted by LEADERSHIP Sunday in Calabar stated that the Commissioner of Police, Cross River State Command, CP Rashid B. Afegbua, PSC, MNIPS, described the operation as a clear demonstration of the Command’s commitment to crime prevention, protection of lives, and strict adherence to the rule of law.

“The operation shows our commitment to crime prevention and rule of law,” Afegbua said.

He strongly condemned mob action, emphasising that suspects apprehended by private individuals must always be handed over to the police for proper investigation and prosecution in accordance with the law.

The CP appealed to the public to cooperate with the police by providing timely and useful information and to refrain from taking the law into their own hands.
