Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State has significantly increased the monthly subvention for Pelican Stars FC, raising it from N5 million to N15 million.
This substantial boost aims to enhance the club’s performance and strengthen women’s football within the state.
Mr Lawrence Itanya, Chairman of the Cross River State Sports Commission, announced the funding increase during a press briefing at the U.J. Esuene Sports Stadium yesterday.
He also revealed plans for the third edition of the Queens Cup in 2026, a key initiative championed by the Governor’s wife, Eyoawan Bassey Otu, to promote female participation in sports.
“The competition is a key initiative championed by the governor’s wife, Eyoawan Bassey Otu, to promote female participation in sports,” Mr Itanya stated.
The state government is committed to bolstering sports development through increased funding and infrastructure upgrades, including the renovation of the U.J. Esuene Stadium’s state-of-the-art box and broader improvements across the complex.
The upcoming Queens Cup will feature approximately 36 teams and incorporate seven additional sporting activities. The tournament is designed to empower young girls and foster grassroots talent, offering a platform for discovery and social impact.
The grand finale is strategically planned to coincide with the Governor’s wife’s birthday. Both private and government-backed teams are encouraged to register for free.
This initiative underscores Cross River State’s growing investment in sports, with a particular focus on women’s participation, youth empowerment, and infrastructure renewal.
