The Western Marine Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Lagos, on Wednesday reaffirmed its commitment to community engagement and youth empowerment with the commissioning of the Wale Adeniyi Sports Arena (WASA) in Ibafon, Lagos.

The facility, executed as a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative of the Command, was formally inaugurated by the Comptroller-General of Customs (CGC), Dr. Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, who described the project as a strategic investment in preventive security and sustainable peace.

Addressing officers, community leaders, and other stakeholders at the ceremony, Adeniyi said the arena represents far more than a recreational centre.

“This facility, which includes a football pitch, basketball court, and table tennis board, is a symbol of our commitment to community partnership, youth empowerment, and preventive security. Sustainable security cannot rely on enforcement alone; it must be built on inclusion, opportunity, and positive engagement,” he stated.

The CGC emphasised that sports serve as a powerful tool for promoting discipline, unity, and leadership development, noting that structured recreational platforms for young people help reduce exposure to crime, drug abuse, and other social vices.

“When we create platforms that inspire young people, we reduce vulnerabilities and strengthen our communities. Customs is not only about revenue generation and border protection; it is also about responsible corporate citizenship and national development,” Adeniyi added before formally declaring the arena open.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Controller of the Western Marine Command, P.N. Ntadi, said the project reflects the Service’s belief that security must combine enforcement with prevention.

“Today is not merely about unveiling a sports facility. It is about purpose. It is about people. It is about investing in peace and preserving a legacy of service,” Ntadi said.

He explained that the arena is named in honour of Wale Adeniyi, a former National Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Customs Service, in recognition of his professionalism, grassroots engagement, and dedication to duty.

According to Ntadi, naming the facility after Adeniyi is intended to immortalise exemplary service and inspire younger officers and community members alike.

He added that the initiative is designed to take youths off the streets and channel their energy into constructive activities, stressing that sports instil discipline, teamwork, resilience, and respect for rules and values that align with the ethos of the Nigeria Customs Service.

With the commissioning of WASA, the NCS has signalled a broader approach to security, one that combines border protection with youth engagement and community development.
