The Apapa Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has strengthened operational ties with the Nigerian Navy to enhance maritime security and ensure seamless cargo movement through the nation’s busiest port.

Customs Area Controller of the Command, Comptroller Emmanuel Oshoba, strengthened this partnership with a courtesy visit to the Flag Officer Commanding, Western Naval Command, Rear Admiral Abubakar Abdullahi Mustapha, in Lagos.
Oshoba said the move aligns with the policy thrust of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, which emphasises consolidation, collaboration, and innovation.
He explained that upon assuming office, he prioritised consolidating existing gains and strengthening the Command’s relationship with the Navy to improve operational efficiency along the Apapa port corridor.
“Modern border management requires agencies to work together. While Customs is known for trade facilitation and revenue generation, we also perform critical security functions, and achieving this mandate requires close collaboration with the military,” he said.
The Customs chief commended the Navy for safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime domain, noting that secure waters are essential for vessel movement and international trade. He also called for sustained naval support to ensure smooth cargo clearance and port operations.

In his response, Rear Admiral Mustapha reaffirmed the Navy’s commitment to inter-agency cooperation, stressing that effective port security depends on strong coordination among relevant agencies.

He equally praised the Nigeria Customs Service for its recent performance, particularly in blocking revenue leakages and exceeding national revenue targets, noting that improved revenue would support infrastructure development and social programmes.

The naval commander assured the Apapa Command of continued cooperation in securing the maritime environment and supporting Nigeria’s economic growth through safe and efficient port operations.
