Nigeria’s Matthew Kuti and Favour Ojo began their table tennis campaigns at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games on a disappointing note after losing their opening singles matches on Day 2 of the competition.
Kuti suffered a straight-sets 3-0 defeat to Hong Kong’s Ho Ki Li in the men’s singles preliminary stage, while Ojo went down 3-1 to Hanka Kodet of Czechia in the women’s singles.
The defeats leave both Nigerian players needing positive results in their subsequent encounters to keep their hopes of progressing in the competition alive.
Kuti will have an opportunity to recover when he takes on Tunisia’s Youssef Aidli in his next match, while Ojo is scheduled to face Egypt’s Yara Elbadawy.
Both players will be eager to put their opening setbacks behind them and secure victories as they continue their quest for a strong showing at the Games.
Nigeria is represented by 19 athletes across six sports at the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, which run from October 31 to November 13 in Senegal.
