A former Ogun State governor and senator representing Ogun East Senatorial District, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, has appealed to the people of Ijebuland to unite behind the ongoing effort to create a new state from the old Ijebu Province.
Speaking during the BATOGD Movement Tour in Odogbolu Local Government Area of the state, Daniel said the current agitation for state creation represents the “last real hope” for accelerated and sustainable development in Ijebuland.
He emphasised that achieving this goal would require absolute unity among all stakeholders across the nine local government councils that made up the old Ijebu Province, stressing that the only obstacle that would impede the realisation of the collective project is disunity among the Ijebu people.
Reflecting on his tenure as governor of the State, which spanned between 2003 and 2011, Daniel highlighted several development projects executed across Ijebuland, including the establishment of the Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) in Ijagun, the College of Education in Omu, and the construction of numerous schools and critical infrastructure that continue to benefit local communities.
He disclosed that significant groundwork has already been done behind the scenes toward the creation of the proposed state, but noted that he had intentionally avoided public noise on the matter until substantial progress was made.
According to him, the process of state creation is rigorous and demands strict adherence to constitutional requirements, with unity of purpose being the most critical factor.
Daniel revealed that discussions are nearing conclusion on the proposed name and capital of the new state, tentatively referred to as Ijebu-Remo State.
He warned that failure by stakeholders to reach a consensus could result in external forces making those decisions on their behalf.
Daniel, however, reassured constituents that he would not embark on a project he could not complete, assuring them of his total dedication to the state creation agenda.
The Senator also enjoined his constituents to mobilise en masse toward the e-registration exercise of the All Progressives Congress (APC), which commences next week, urging citizens across all demographics to register at their respective ward Secretariats.
