Matthijs de Ligt will not represent the Netherlands at this year’s World Cup, after the Manchester United defender underwent back surgery to resolve a persistent injury that has sidelined him since November.
The Dutch centre-back is now expected to remain out of action until the early stages of the next campaign, effectively ending any hope of featuring in the global tournament.
In a statement released on Friday, Manchester United confirmed the procedure had been completed successfully. “Matthijs de Ligt has undergone successful surgery to address a back injury,” the club said.
“Having diligently worked throughout his rehabilitation process, the decision was made that a corrective procedure was the best course of action.”
De Ligt had enjoyed a strong start to the season, featuring in every minute of United’s opening 13 Premier League matches before the injury brought his momentum to a halt.
The former Juventus and Bayern Munich centre-back also shared his own reflections on the difficult period.
“Since November, I have done everything, pushing myself in every session and exploring every option, to get back to doing what I love, playing football,” he said.
“I am grateful to everyone who has supported me throughout a difficult period in my career. I remain as determined as ever to represent Manchester United and play in front of our incredible supporters as soon as possible.”
