The management of the Delta State University, (DELSU), Abraka, has rusticated a 200-level Biotechnology student, Ezi Ugoma, for uploading a video on her TikTok account showing a dying student allegedly involved in an abortion incident.

She was rusticated for four semesters, effective from the 2025/2026 academic session, and would be allowed to resume her studies in the 2027/2028 session.

According to a letter issued by the university and dated October 21, 2025, signed by the Principal Assistant Registrar (Students), Ughwumiakpor A., on behalf of the Deputy Registrar (Students), Ugoma was found guilty of breaching her matriculation oath by inappropriately filming and uploading the scene of a dying student at the University Health Centre on social media.

The university described the act as gross misconduct and a violation of the institution’s code of conduct.

“You will recall that you appeared before the Students Disciplinary Committee (SDC) held on Thursday 21”, Friday 22nd and Monday 25th August, 2025 to defend yourself against the underlisted allegations:

Act of gross misconduct.

“Breach of matriculation oath arising from a case of inappropriate filming with a mobile handset, the scene of a dying student at the University Health Centre on TikTok.

“After due consideration of the Committee’s report, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Samuel O. Asagba, has approved the recommendation of the Committee, that you be rusticated for four (4) semesters on the offence of assault, with effect from 2025/2026 academic session. You are to resume studies with effect from 2027/2028 academic session.

“Accordingly, you are hereby rusticated for four (4) semesters with effect from 2025/2026 academic session and to resume studies with effect from 2027/2028 academic session.

“Copies of this letter are being forwarded to your sponsor(s) and other relevant authorities of the university for their Information, guidance and further necessary action,” the statement added.

Meanwhile, Ugoma’s stepfather was said to have reacted angrily to the development, reportedly telling her to kiss her education goodbye forever and prepare to return to the village.

But a broadcast journalist, Oseni Rufai, in a post on his X  handle, condemned the university’s action and appealed to the Vice-Chancellor to overturn what he described as a gross injustice.

Rufai urged the institution not to “allow this young lady’s future to be shattered and cut short.”

“I’m writing to you this morning regarding an unjustifiable two years suspension that was given to a 200 level biotechnology student from Delta State University, Abraka, over a video that she uploaded on her TikTok account about girls not getting involved in abortions as clearly stated in her caption.

“Please sir do not allow this injustice to stand as this young lady’s future is about to be shattered and cut short.”

“In addition to the pandemonium, her stepfather had vehemently told her to kiss her education goodbye forever, and that she should prepare to go back to the village.

“Please sir, don’t allow this to happen to her, we need your help, please intervene. I look forward to hearing from you sir, thank you.”  he said.
