The Renaissance Care and Empowerment Foundation (RECEF) has called for an immediate investigation into the alleged arrest and detention of the Editor of Kogi Reports, Mr. Opeyemi Owoeye, by operatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), describing the action as an abuse of power and a threat to democracy.
In a statement issued to commemorate the June 12 Democracy Day celebration, the Executive Director of RECEF, Amb. Idris Ozovehe Muraina, said the incident, which reportedly occurred less than 24 hours before Democracy Day, reflected a disturbing misunderstanding of democratic principles by some state actors.
Muraina said that while the organisation joined millions of Nigerians in celebrating the nation’s democratic journey, the country was still grappling with severe economic difficulties and persistent security challenges.
According to him, although the government has recorded some progress in addressing these issues, the achievements remain insufficient and require more aggressive and citizen-focused policies to ensure Nigerians enjoy the dividends of democracy.
He stressed that democracy cannot flourish in an atmosphere of intimidation, economic hardship, and shrinking civic space.
The RECEF Executive Director expressed concern over what he described as the overreach of the Kogi State Command of the NSCDC in the reported arrest of the journalist, warning security agencies against allowing themselves to be used to settle personal scores.
“At a time when security agencies should focus their intelligence and resources on combating actual threats to public peace, targeting the press is a dangerous distraction,” he said.
Muraina maintained that any individual or institution dissatisfied with media reports should seek legal redress through the courts rather than resort to the use of security agencies.
He reminded security agencies of the constitutional provisions guaranteeing freedom of expression and press freedom, describing the media as the watchdog of society and the fourth estate of the realm.
According to him, an attack on the press amounts to an attack on democracy itself.
RECEF therefore called on the Commandant General of the NSCDC to order a comprehensive investigation into the incident and ensure that any officer found culpable is sanctioned to prevent future abuse of power.
“As we celebrate June 12, let us remember that true democracy is built on the rule of law, institutional accountability, and respect for human rights,” Muraina stated.
The organisation also urged governments at all levels to strengthen democratic institutions and implement policies that would address the economic and security concerns confronting Nigerians.
RECEF prayed for peace and progress in Kogi State and across Nigeria as the country marked another Democracy Day anniversary.
