National Assembly has declared that democracy in Nigeria has fully stabilised, citing the absence of military intervention threats and the steady growth of legislative institutions over the past 26 years.
The clerk to the National Assembly (CNA), Barr Kamoru Ogunlana, made the assertion at yesterday’s induction for 785 newly recruited members of staff in Abuja.

Represented by the deputy clerk to the National Assembly (DCNA), Engr Bashir Yero, Ogunlana said strengthening democratic governance has enabled the legislature to evolve into a more professional and responsive institution.

“Our democracy has continued to stabilise, with no threat of military intervention, and the National Assembly as an institution has grown stronger, more professional, and more responsive to the needs of the Nigerian people,” he stated.

Ogunlana described the recruitment of 785 new staff across Grade Levels 8 to 12 in December last year as a strategic move to enhance service delivery within the legislature.
He urged the inductees to view their appointment not just as a job, but as a national calling.

“You are joining the Service at a most auspicious time. Working in the National Assembly demands more than academic qualifications or routine duties. It requires deep knowledge of legislative processes, high moral standards, and personal discipline,” he said.

He charged the new staff with familiarising themselves with the legislature’s mission and vision, upholding their civic responsibilities, and constantly updating their knowledge of relevant laws and institutional regulations.

Ogunlana also emphasised the importance of digital literacy in meeting the evolving demands of modern legislative work.

“Remain loyal, diligent, and committed to the service of our country through this great institution,” he added.

Reassuring the staff on their welfare, the CNA disclosed that all entitlements, including the statutory first 28-day allowance, have been settled.

“Your salaries are paid promptly.

As you settle into your roles, remember that the National Assembly is the symbol of our democracy. By serving here, you are directly contributing to strengthening governance and consolidating Nigeria’s democratic journey,” he said.

In a related development, Ogunlana last week assured over 3,000 legislative aides to the 469 federal lawmakers of job protection and improved remuneration, as part of broader efforts to reposition the National Assembly’s workforce for enhanced efficiency and impact.
