Dutch forward Memphis Depay has accused Brazilian club Corinthians of breaching a previously agreed contract extension, calling the club’s conduct “unacceptable” after his two-year deal expired without renewal.

The 32-year-old former Manchester United and Barcelona player, who joined Corinthians in 2024, said the extension was “explicitly agreed upon by the president as well as the sporting, legal and financial department” but was later rescinded.

“I didn’t want this situation and always respected the club throughout the process, but now I am forced to react strongly in order to preserve my interests,” Depay wrote on social media, adding he would speak publicly in the coming days and would not leave the matter “unsanctioned.”

Corinthians, currently seventh in Brazil’s Serie A, said the decision was financial, stating that a new commitment “would not be compatible with the financial balance we need to preserve to ensure the institution’s sustainability.” Club president Osmar Stabile will hold a press conference to address the decision.

Depay scored 20 goals in 79 appearances for Corinthians, helping the club win the Copa do Brasil in 2025 and the Supercopa do Brasil this year. He is the Netherlands’ all-time leading goalscorer but failed to score in three matches as his side exited the 2026 World Cup in the last 32.
