It appears that ‘Michael’, Antoine Fuqua’s biopic about ‘The King of Pop’ Michael Jackson, will be sharing a premiere date of April 24, 2026, with an Arabic historical epic film titled ‘Desert Warrior’.
Directed by Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes, The Gambler) and starring Anthony Mackie (Captain America and the Brave New World), ‘Desert Warrior’ is set in 7th-century Arabia, at a time when the desert was full of warring tribes.
A ruthless Emperor Kisra (Sir Ben Kingsley) comes across a princess (Aiysha Hart) and is intent on making her his concubine. Fleeing into the desert with her father, she is hunted by a merciless army and forced to trust a bandit (Anthony Mackie) with secrets of his own. Rising from fugitive to fearless warrior, Hind units warring tribes for a final stand, the Battle of Dhi Qar, a clash that would change history forever.
Filmed in late 2021, ‘Desert Warrior’ had a lengthy post-production period, with behind-the-scenes issues that led to delays. But it eventually premiered at the Zurich Film Festival last year.
Other members of the cast include Sharlto Copley, Ghassan Massoud, Sami Bouajila, Lamis Ammar, Geza Rohrig, and Numan Acar. It is the largest production ever to be filmed in Saudi Arabia.
Meanwhile, Fuqua and his team have been drumming up promotion for the ‘Michael’ biopic not solely through weekly interviews about the film, but also through live and recorded marching band performances from Southern American universities.
At present, it falls on the film with the best promotional and marketing strategies to pull in more film lovers to the cinema on April 24. But for the moment, the odds are in ‘Michael’s favour.
