The Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA) has hailed the Court of Appeal judgment setting aside the lower court’s decision directing the deregistration of some political parties, describing the ruling as a victory for democracy and the rule of law.
The party, in a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Judith Aguenu, said the judgment reaffirmed the supremacy of the rule of law, due process and the constitutional right of Nigerians to political association and participation.
The DLA said the ruling went beyond the political parties directly affected, arguing that it represented a significant victory for Nigeria’s democracy.
According to the party, a vibrant democracy depends on political plurality, fair competition and respect for judicial processes, warning that any action capable of arbitrarily shrinking the democratic space should be subjected to strict constitutional scrutiny.
The DLA maintained that political contests should be determined by Nigerians through free, fair and credible elections rather than through legal or administrative actions capable of undermining the democratic choice of the electorate.
It therefore commended the judiciary for upholding the principles of justice and constitutional order.
The party also urged political actors, institutions and other stakeholders to respect the independence of the judiciary and remain committed to strengthening democratic institutions.
With the 2027 electoral process gathering momentum, the DLA called for a level playing field for all lawfully registered political parties, saying this was necessary for peace, stability and the deepening of democracy.
The party reaffirmed its commitment to issue-based politics and electoral integrity, stressing that the collective responsibility of Nigerians was to build a democratic system where the will of the people would always prevail.
