Dolly Parton, the celebrated American country music singer, songwriter, actress and entrepreneur whose music and distinctive personality made her one of the most recognisable entertainers in the world, has died at the age of 80.

Parton, known for her powerful songwriting, unmistakable voice, glamorous appearance and larger-than-life personality, rose from humble beginnings in rural Tennessee to become one of the most successful figures in country music.

Born into a large and poor family, Parton grew up in a one-room cabin in the Great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee. Despite the financial hardship of her childhood, she developed an early passion for music and began performing and writing songs while still young.

Her songwriting ability eventually took her to Nashville, where she established herself as a prolific songwriter before becoming a major recording artist in her own right.

Parton went on to record some of country music’s most enduring songs, including “Jolene”, “9 to 5”, “Coat of Many Colours” and “I Will Always Love You”, a song she wrote and recorded before it became a global hit through Whitney Houston’s celebrated rendition.

Her music frequently explored love, heartbreak, poverty, family, ambition and resilience, themes that helped her connect with audiences across generations.

Beyond music, Parton successfully expanded her career into film, television, publishing and business. She appeared in popular films including 9 to 5, The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, Steel Magnolias and The Beverly Hillbillies.

She also built a substantial business empire, most notably through Dollywood, the theme park in Tennessee named after her.

Parton was equally celebrated for her philanthropy. Through the Dollywood Foundation, she established initiatives supporting literacy and education, including the Imagination Library, which provides books to children.

Her influence extended far beyond country music, earning her recognition from audiences across the world and making her a cultural icon whose career crossed musical and social boundaries.

Parton’s journey from rural poverty to international superstardom became central to her public image, with her life and career often presented as a testament to talent, determination and an enduring connection to her roots.

With her death at 80, the entertainment world loses an artiste whose songs, distinctive style and philanthropic work touched millions of lives and whose influence remained firmly embedded in American popular culture.
