A senior lecturer at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Dr Uchechi Onyedikachi, has raised the alarm over the impact of micro- plastics and heavy metals on soil in the country

Onyedikachi spoke during a seminar organised by the university for cassava farmers in Umuahia, the Abia State capital, drawing attention to the dangers of the items on soil quality, crop yield and public health.

The researcher, therefore, called for stronger regulations, increased community awareness and sustainable waste management practices to safeguard food safety and livelihoods.

She urged farmers to prioritize and adopt global best agricultural and environmental practices to ensure food safety, protect public health and promote sustainable farming systems.

‎In her presentation, a resource person, Mrs Chinyere Anyanwu, explained that agricultural productivity had declined in the country due to increasing development pressures on farmlands.
