The Dutch Football Federation has disclosed that FIFA has broadened the scope of former international Marc Overmars’ one-year suspension, initially imposed within Dutch football, to encompass a worldwide prohibition.
Overmars faced repercussions for transmitting sexually explicit photographs and videos to female staff, prompting his resignation as Ajax’s director of football in February 2022. Acknowledging his misconduct, he expressed regret for his actions.
Despite stepping down from Ajax, Overmars received an opportunity at Royal Antwerp a month later, taking on the role of technical director for the Belgian club.
Initially, the Dutch Sports Tribunal (ISR) imposed a two-year ban, with one year suspended, limiting Overmars from holding any positions affiliated with the Dutch FA.
However, this suspension has now been extended beyond the initial limitations, the AFP reported.
The Dutch Football Federation has informed AFP that they are obliged to communicate this extension to FIFA’s disciplinary committee, which will determine the global enforcement of the ban.
The committee’s decision has led to the widened suspension.
