Easter: Ebonyi First Lady Offsets Medical Bills Of 12 Indigent Patients

Donates cash, gift items to destitutes

Wife of the Ebonyi State Governor, Mrs Mary-Maudline Nwifuru has paid the medical bills of 12 patients at the Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital Abakaliki, months after their inability to pay the bills after discharge.

Mrs. Nwifuru who is the founder of Better Health for Rural Women Children and Internally Displaced Foundation, BERWO, said the gesture aligned with the spirit of the Easter celebration.

“The donation we are making today was for indigent patients who could not pay their hospital bills due to lack of funds. The offer was for those who were indebted to the hospitals because of their inability to pay their medical bills,’’ she said.

Mrs. Nwifuru visited the antenatal unit, neonatal unit, pediatric surgery, postnatal, children emergency wards of the hospital, where she also donated various gift items to babies and their mothers.

The Ebonyi State First Lady also visited the Saint Vincent the Poor Old People’s Home, where she distributed various gift items and undisclosed amount of money to the inmates of the home.

She urged the inmates to continue praying for the present administration in the state, while pledge of continued care for the home.

Some of the items distributed include bags of rice, cartons of noodles among other food items including new born babies’ items.

In his remarks, the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Prof Robinson Onoh, commended the governor’s wife on her dedication to the well-being of women and children across the state.

Prof. Onoh applauded her gesture of offsetting the medical bills of the indigent patients, disclosing that some patients had spent time at the hospital after their discharge due to their inability to pay their bill which he noted was capable of exposing them to more health risks.

The CMD urged other well-to-do individuals in the state to emulate the Governor’s wife by coming to the aid of other indigent patients trapped in the hospital.
