The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission has extended its warmest congratulations to the Republic of Senegal, its people and highest authorities, and the national football team, the Lions of Teranga, on their remarkable victory in the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
A statement issued on Monday by the Commission described this outstanding achievement as the result of the dedication, discipline, and talent of the players, the technical staff, and all stakeholders of Senegalese football.
The match ended 1-0 in favour of the Senegalese against the host nation, Morocco in Rabat on Sunday after a thrilling but controversial game that went into extra time after both sides tied 0-0 in regulation time.
The ECOWAS Commission noted that the feat recorded by Teranga Lions represented a source of immense pride not only for the people of Senegal but also for the entire West African region.
“The ECOWAS Commission welcomes this exceptional success, which illustrates the vital role of sport in promoting social cohesion, unity, and hope among the youth of Africa, and reiterates its commitment to promoting sports as a catalyst for regional integration and sustainable development,” the statement said.
