Edo APC Debunks Allegations Against Gov Okpebholo On LG Attacks

Edo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has rejected claims from a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) that Governor Monday Okpebholo was behind the violent attacks on three local government areas (LGAs’) headquarters in the state.

In a statement issued yesterday by the APC chairman in Edo State, Jarret Tenebe, the party described the allegations as “baseless, misleading and politically motivated.”

The statement followed a thorough investigation conducted by the party into the incidents.

“We categorically refute the recent claims made by the factional chairman of the PDP in Edo State. These allegations, which suggest that Governor Okpebholo deployed thugs and armed men to seize control of LGA headquarters, are not only false but part of a smear campaign aimed at discrediting the governor,” Tenebe stated.

The APC explained that, following extensive investigations and consultations with eyewitnesses and other relevant sources, the violence at the LGA headquarters stemmed from internal power struggles and factional disputes within the local councils, rather than any orchestrated actions by the governor. These clashes, the party claims, have been brewing for months and are unrelated to the state government.

The statement further reaffirmed Governor Okpebholo’s commitment to the rule of law, noting that his administration has consistently prioritised good governance, transparency and respect for democratic principles.

“Governor Okpebholo has consistently demonstrated his respect for the judiciary and has adhered to all court orders and injunctions concerning the LGA councils,” Tenebe added.

Addressing the allegations that Okpebholo had ignored court directives, the APC clarified that the governor’s administration has been engaged in dialogue with all relevant authorities and stakeholders to ensure compliance with the rule of law, particularly with respect to the councils.

The APC also expressed concern about the credibility of the factional PDP leadership.

“We believe that Tony Aziegbemi, the chairman of the factional PDP Caretaker Committee, should be held accountable for his actions, including the orchestrated kidnapping incident he allegedly staged in the past. Given this history, it is concerning that his statements are being used to attack the governor,” the statement read.
