The Edo State Police Command, on Saturday, warned motorists and members of the public that attacks on police officers on lawful duty will no longer be tolerated.

The warning followed an incident in which three police personnel of the Command were knocked down at a checkpoint in Benin City by a motorist.

The incident, which occurred along Iyekogba Estate Gate on December 24, 2025, involved a reckless driver who reportedly drove against traffic, breached a police checkpoint barricade and deliberately turned back to ram into officers on duty, knocking down three of them in the process.

Police sources said the suspect did not stop after breaching the checkpoint but continued his dangerous drive until he eventually crashed into multiple vehicles before being restrained and arrested by officers.

The injured policemen were immediately rushed to a medical facility, where they are currently receiving treatment.

Confirming the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, CP Monday Agbonika, said the Command had repeatedly warned motorists to slow down at checkpoints and submit themselves to lawful police checks in the interest of public safety.

“There is absolutely no justifiable reason for any motorist to speed through a police checkpoint except with the intention to evade lawful checks or endanger the lives of officers,” he stated.

According to preliminary investigations, the suspect was identified as Nsikak Okon ‘M’, a 19-year-old unlicensed driver. Police disclosed that a black Mercedes-Benz GLK SUV valued at about ₦28 million was recovered from him, adding that the vehicle, which has been in use since May 2024, was unregistered.

Further search of the suspect reportedly led to the recovery of a substance suspected to be Canadian Loud, as well as a Sprite bottle containing a sky-blue liquid believed to be diluted refnol.

Police said investigations were ongoing to determine the full extent of the suspect’s actions and possible criminal intent.

Reacting to the development, CP Agbonika warned that the era of attacks on police officers had come to an end.

“Any person who deliberately attacks or attempts to harm police officers on lawful duty will not be spared. Enough is enough,” he added, assuring the public that the command remained committed to maintaining law and order and ensuring public safety across Edo State.
