EFCC Raids Varsity Hostels, Arrests 19 Students For Internet Fraud

In a bid to stem internet scams, popularly called ‘yahoo yahoo’, operatives of the Akwa Ibom State Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have busted a syndicate of organised cyber criminals and arrested no fewer than 19 undergraduate students.

This followed the raiding of the Akwa Ibom State University (AKSU), Ikot Akpaden in Mkpat-Enin local government area, at the weekend.

LEADERSHIP gathered the suspects were rounded up at their private hostels including Obong Abasi Lodge and Mfon Obong Lodge, following intelligence and several months of painstaking surveillance.

Disclosing the breakthrough, the anti-graft agency on behalf of the chairman, Abulrasheed Bawa, said “their arrest followed several months of surveillance on their suspected involvement in romance scam, fraudulent crypto currency transactions and impersonation.”

According to the command, items recovered from them include, several laptops and mobile phones, and vowed that they will be charged to court as soon as Investigations are concluded.

EFCC, therefore warned students of tertiary institutions to be wary of untoward lifestyles and shun bad company to avoid their future being truncated as relevant sections of the law would be invoked in the process of getting suspected criminals to face the law and be punished if found culpable.
