Austin Eguavoen, the Technical Director of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), has voiced his dismay regarding Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle’s decision to overlook players from the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) for the recently concluded 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
In an interview with Footy Africa, Eguavoen highlighted the presence of several high-calibre players within the NPFL who, in his view, merited a place in the tournament squad.
Despite his disappointment, Eguavoen clarified that the NFF would not interfere with Chelle’s player selections for any competition. He stated: “I felt disappointed that we did not include some NPFL players in the AFCON squad. Some players in the team may not even get a minute of action, so why couldn’t we include a few players from the local league? At least three or four would have been better.”
Eguavoen further emphasised the quality of local talent, remarking, “The players are not bad, and just because we didn’t do well at CHAN doesn’t mean we should throw the baby out with the bathwater.” He stressed the importance of domestic players featuring in major tournaments like AFCON.
While acknowledging that player selection rests with the coach, Eguavoen confirmed that discussions have taken place regarding the integration of NPFL players. He also suggested that Chelle’s increased presence in Nigeria would provide better opportunities to scout local talent.
