Ekiti Governorship: INEC Seeks Unified Action For Credible Election

Ahead of the June 20 governorship election in Ekiti State, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has intensified efforts to ensure a smooth and credible process by urging stronger collaboration among key stakeholders.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner in Ekiti State, Bunmi Omoseyindemi, reaffirmed INEC’s commitment to delivering a peaceful, inclusive, and transparent election, noting that the success of the exercise hinges on the collective responsibility of all actors involved.

Speaking in Ado Ekiti during an Election Risk Management (ERM) sensitisation workshop, Omoseyindemi stressed the need for political parties and their supporters to strictly adhere to the Electoral Act and INEC guidelines. He called for issue-based campaigns devoid of violence, incitement, or any actions capable of undermining the integrity of the poll.

He explained that the workshop was organised to deepen stakeholders’ understanding of the ERM framework, identify election-specific risks, and develop coordinated strategies to address them effectively.

According to him, the ERM framework serves as a vital mechanism for detecting and managing threats that could disrupt the electoral process, including security challenges, logistical constraints, misinformation, and electoral malpractices.

Omoseyindemi highlighted key concerns from previous elections, particularly vote-buying and voter inducement, describing them as major threats to electoral credibility. He also warned against the spread of misinformation and disinformation, especially on social media, which could mislead voters and inflame tensions.

Other risks identified include political violence, thuggery, and possible disruptions in certain areas, as well as logistical difficulties in reaching remote communities. He further pointed to inter-party intolerance, low voter turnout driven by fear or distrust, and non-compliance with electoral regulations as issues requiring urgent attention.

Participants at the workshop included representatives from civil society organisations, security agencies such as the Nigeria Police Force, Nigerian Army, and Department of State Services, as well as the media and other relevant institutions.

Omoseyindemi emphasised that while these challenges are significant, they can be effectively managed through proactive engagement, vigilance, and sustained cooperation among stakeholders.

He reiterated that only through shared commitment and strict compliance with established guidelines can the commission achieve its goal of conducting an election that truly reflects the will of the people of Ekiti State.
