Former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has taken a swipe at former governors Nasir El-Rufai and Rotimi Amaechi, saying they owe Nigerians an apology for the current state of the nation.

Shehu Sani who spoke yesterday in his Sallah message at his residence said it was hypocritical for key political figures who had been in power for over two decades to lament the economic condition which they had the opportunity to address.

“If El-Rufai and Amaechi are still talking about poverty and hunger in this country, then they must first apologise to Nigerians. Since 1999, they’ve both occupied powerful positions. If the country is still in this state, it means they failed,” Sani said.

He said the ongoing hunger, unemployment and insecurity were a direct result of years of misgovernance, policy failures and neglect by those who had the chance to effect meaningful change.

“They are shameless to face the nation and talk about hardship. The poor are suffering. People can’t afford food, school fees or hospital bills, and yet those who caused this mess are acting like they are mere observers,” he said.

He accused the political elite of distancing themselves from the consequences of their decisions while positioning themselves as part of the solution.

“You cannot govern Nigeria for years and turn around to speak as if you were never part of the problem. The people deserve sincerity and accountability, not recycled rhetoric,” he added.

Sani called for national prayers and unity amid the tough times, stating that while Nigeria was facing immense challenges, but there was still hope if the people and the government commit to reforms and sincere governance.

“We are in one of the most difficult times in our history. But we must not give up. Let us pray for peace and progress, and most importantly, demand better leadership,” he said.

On the insecurity in the northern region, Sani emphasised the need for collective action and unity, particularly in the face of banditry and insurgency.

“The North is bleeding. Bandits have displaced millions and killed thousands. We must unite behind all genuine efforts to restore peace,” he said.

Senator Sani urged Nigerians to remain patriotic and reject any attempt to incite division or stigmatise the country, stressing that Nigeria had contributed significantly to African peace and deserves better from its leaders.

“Don’t let anyone tell you Nigeria is a scam. Be proud of your country, but be bold enough to demand justice and accountability from those who led us here,” he said.
