Emir of Gombe Dr. Abubakar, Assures Continued Support for Sponsors, Organisers of Sports activities in the Emirate
The Emir of Gombe, Alhaji Abubakar Shehu Abubakar, has applauded the initiator and sponsor of Gombe State Inter Secondary Schools Athletics and Principal’s Cup Championships, Hon. Ahmad Shuaibu Gara Gombe, for his foresight and commitment to the development of Gombe’s youth through sports.
His Royal Highness Abubakar gave the commendation during the closing ceremony of the one week long athletics and football fiesta held at Gombe Stadium Pantami at the weekend.
The emir, who was represented by Dan Adalan Gombe, Muhammed Baba Mabami, said the championship will go along ways in unearth the hidden sports talents in Gombe and at the same time improve their skills for future national and international engagements.
“We really appreciate Hon. Gara’s commitment and determination in moving the state forward as far as sports is concerned in the state,” Emir stated.
He assured the commitment of Gombe Emirate Council to support any programme such as the Gombe Inter Schools Athletics Football Championships aimed at empowering youth in the state.
The Emir, who was awarded a lifetime patron of the competition by the organiser, Ahmed Shuaibu-Gara Gombe, congratulated the victorious athletes and urged the losers to redouble efforts in the subsequent edition of the competitions.
Government Day Secondary School (GDSS) Doma emerged the overall champions of the one week long event. The school won nine gold, five silver, and six bronze, totalling 20 medals to top the medal table.
They were closely followed by Government Vocational Training Center (GVTC) Kamara with eight gold, five silver and seven bronze medals, while the third position went to Government Day Secondary Schools (GDSS) Bolari East with 14 medals, comprising six gold, three silver and five bronze.
Out of the 73 schools that participated in a week long sports fiesta, put together by the chief executive officer (CEO) of Green White Green (GWG) Sports Center Limited, Ahmed Shuaibu-Gara Gombe, 24 schools, including GDSS Ahmadu Gombe, Diocesan High School, Government Commercial Secondary Schools (GDSS) Shehu Abubakar and Government Day Secondary School (GDSS) Orji Estate.
GDSS Shehu Abubakar won the football gold (Principal’s Cup) following a 1- 0 win over Savannah School Gombe in a keenly final match played at the Gombe Stadium in Pantami on Friday’s night.
Adamu Maigari scored the only goal of the match seven minutes to the end of regulation time to help his side take home the giant trophy of the event and two hundred thousand naira (N200,000) cash prize.
The one week long sports fiesta has not only highlights individual athletic prowess in Gombe but also fosters school spirit and camaraderie among students.
