The University of Calabar (UNICAL), on Thursday, installed the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Aminu Ado Bayero, as the new Chancellor of the institution, who would join hands with the University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Florence Obi, in the management of affairs of the institution.

The investiture of Emir Bayero as the 6th Chancellor of the University took place shortly before the 35th convocation of UNICAL, to enable him preside over proceedings and subsequent convocations.

During the presentation of instrument of appointment by President Muhammadu Buhari, who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, he re-affirmed the Emir as the Chancellor with the hope that the confidence reposed in him would not be betrayed.

“I trust that you will faithfully and delligently carry out the duties of your office in the University of Calabar,” Buhari stated.

In his response, Emir Aminu Ado Bayero thanked the President for the appointment and assured him and the University community of his willingness to execute his duties delligently in order to lift the institution to higher heights.

“I feel greatly honoured by my appointment as a Chancellor of this great and historic university.

“I have undertaken to use this opportunity to see to it that we work with the University Management for its growth and development.

“I wish to use this opportunity to register my deepest and most sincere gratitude to President Muhammadu Buhari for his appointment,” the Emir said.

The new Chancellor pledged to do everything within his reach to ensure that the best attention is given to join forces with the management of the institution to address several challenges troubling the school.

“Given the parameters, indices and matrix of survival in contemporary Nigeria, we shall be duty bound to study the welfare scheme of staff in the University in relation to the take-home pay of our staff.

“Our University must occupy a place of pride in educational rating among Nigerian universities.

“We are confronted with the task of building our first choice to international standards and acceptablity,” Bayero stressed.

In her remarks earlier, Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Florence Obi, promised to join hands with the newly installed 6th Chancellor to take the school to higher pedestal.
