Nigerian actor and filmmaker Emmanuel Ikubese has opened up about the emotional toll of his short-lived marriage to celebrity makeup artist Anita Adetoye, popularly known as Anita Brows.

The couple, who tied the knot in a high-profile ceremony in March 2020, sparked breakup rumours less than a year later when they deleted their wedding photos and unfollowed each other on social media. Speaking on the Archives of Becoming podcast, Ikubese admitted that the union’s collapse in 2021 felt like a heavy personal loss.

The actor revealed that the end of the marriage led to a deep identity crisis. As someone who is family-oriented, he noted that the union’s failure made him feel he had let himself down, especially given the public nature of their wedding.

“I had always desired a family, and now I had gotten it. For the very first time in my life, that made me feel like a failure. The wedding I had was very high profile, and I just felt like I’d failed,” he shared.

Ikubese described the experience as a “divine reset,” explaining that the pain pushed him to reconnect with his faith and rediscover his true self. He admitted that before the crash, he was living a life of fame without fully understanding his purpose or identity.

“It changed my life. It changed how I see life. I was always a lost Emmanuel. The world was celebrating someone who had not even found himself. Fame just felt good, but I didn’t understand the hurts carried along the line. 2020 was just a crash,” the actor added.

While the filmmaker stated he could only speak from his own perspective, he expressed gratitude for the self-discovery journey that followed the painful split.
