The camp of Team Nigeria was thrown into disarray late Tuesday evening as news broke that Chukwuebuka “Big Chuks” Enekwechi, the nation’s most dominant shot putter in history, has withdrawn from the 2026 African Athletics Championships in Accra, Ghana.

The sudden decision has effectively shattered Nigeria’s gold medal hopes in the men’s field events, just days before the competition was set to begin.

Enekwechi, who had been listed in the initial 45-athlete strong squad, was widely expected to not only defend the title he had won three consecutive times but also to challenge his own Nigerian record of 21.80m. His rivalry with South African and Egyptian throwers had been billed as one of the headline clashes of the championships.

However, the veteran thrower’s name was conspicuously absent from the final technical meeting sheets, sparking frantic speculation among officials and fans.

The confirmation came via a terse statement from Making of Champions on their official X handle, a reliable source for Nigerian athletics news.

“Another withdrawal for Nigeria — Chukwuebuka Enekwechi will not be participating at the 2026 African Championships in Ghana. Big Chuks will not be defending the title he won three consecutive times. Emmanuel Audu and Divine Oladipo will now carry the nation’s hopes in the shot put events in Accra.”

While no official reason was given for the withdrawal, sources close to the athlete suggest a combination of a lingering hamstring strain sustained during a warm-weather training camp in Florida and a last-minute contractual obligation with his professional league overseas.

Enekwechi had opened his 2026 season in spectacular form, hurling a massive 20.82m to claim victory at the Orlen Cup in Poland just last month—a throw that was the second-best in Africa this year.

The timing of the withdrawal is particularly cruel for the Nigerian contingent, which had already been trimmed due to budget constraints. For the two replacements—Emmanuel Audu (personal best 18.45m) and Divine Oladipo (18.12m)—the step-up is monumental.

Both athletes are promising domestic talents but lack the international pedigree and raw power of Enekwechi, whose technique and explosive strength have made him virtually unbeatable on the continent since 2022.

Without their captain and spiritual leader in the throws circle, Team Nigeria’s medal projection has taken a severe hit. The Athletics Federation of Nigeria is expected to release an official statement later today, but for now, the road to Accra 2026 looks significantly steeper for the country’s field events squad.
