England have suffered an injury setback ahead of Tuesday’s Nations League meeting with the Czech Republic, with Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott ruled out after picking up a thigh problem.
The 23-year-old is expected to be sidelined for six to eight weeks, dealing a significant blow to both England and Bournemouth.
Scott impressed on his full international debut in Saturday’s emphatic 7-0 victory over Croatia, playing 70 minutes in central midfield alongside Elliot Anderson before being substituted.
However, the Bournemouth midfielder had felt some discomfort before kick-off and subsequently underwent a scan which revealed the extent of the injury.
England manager Thomas Tuchel described the situation as unusual, saying Scott had completed training without any problems before the Croatia game and had even carried out additional work after training sessions.
“He trained fully, he did extra work after training, so there was no indication from the player or the medical team that he could not play,” Tuchel said.
Scott felt some discomfort during the match but was reluctant to come off. According to Tuchel, the midfielder even believed after the game that he could have completed the full 90 minutes and did not feel injured.
The Arsenal defender Ezri Konsa has also been ruled out of the Czech Republic fixture as a precaution and has returned to his club for treatment.
Tuchel said Konsa’s problems were not serious but were not worth risking. The defender had already missed the Czech Republic fixture on September 29 before joining the England camp and later suffered a further injury against Croatia.
“Konsa had some discomfort when he joined us, played with it against Spain and it got worse,” Tuchel explained.
“He stayed with us and tried to be available for the Czech Republic, but it came too soon. Then he had a little knock on his quad, so there was a minor trauma on top of the other problem.”
Scott’s injury could see him miss as many as nine Bournemouth matches between October 10 and November 8.
That run includes Premier League fixtures and four successive midweek games, with Bournemouth scheduled to face Sturm Graz, AC Milan and Sparta Prague in the Europa League, as well as Aston Villa in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.
Scott made his England debut as a substitute in the 2-0 victory over Czech Republic in Prague before earning his first start against Croatia.
Tuchel was full of praise for the midfielder after his impressive performance, describing it as a “superb first start” and highlighting his composure on the ball, decision-making, confidence and work rate.
“He’s a complete package,” Tuchel said, praising Scott’s ability to provide mobility, variety and energy in midfield.
Scott now joins French forward Eli Junior Kroupi on Bournemouth’s injury list. The 20-year-old remains sidelined after suffering a foot injury during pre-season.
Bournemouth, meanwhile, have endured a difficult start to their Premier League campaign, sitting 17th and still without a league victory after five matches, having recorded three draws and two defeats.
Marco Rose’s side have, however, beaten Lincoln in the EFL Cup and secured a 2-1 victory at Real Sociedad in their European debut.
They return to Premier League action at Chelsea on Saturday before facing Sunderland, Manchester United, Leeds United and Ipswich Town before the November international break.
