Enugu State government has announced plans to employ 400 clinical and non-clinical staff in its functional Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) to strengthen manpower needs.

The executive secretary of Enugu State Primary Health Care Development Agency (ENS-PHCDA), Dr Ifeyinwa Ani-Osheku, disclosed this yesterday in Enugu.

Ani-Osheku said those to be employed are based on existing manpower gaps identified in PHCs in each of the 17 council areas.

She said the agency and the health ministry had already collated data on the PHC centres’ equipment and manpower gaps in the state’s 17 councils.

According to her, accurate manpower and equipment needs and gaps were identified and duly recorded from the onset, adding that the state government has concluded plans to fill the manpower gap in each PHC centre.

She explained that the recruitment would involve the intake of clinical staff like nurses, midwives and lab scientists as well as other non-clinical staff such as ward attendants and cleaners.

The executive secretary said that to check truancy, those to be recruited would come from the communities or council areas where the PHC they would work for is domiciled.

Ani-Osheku added that the Type-2 PHC facilities, being built and well-furnished, would accommodate staff on duty so that truancy or facility abandonment would never surface again.

She stated that the PHC centres would deliver quality healthcare service at the people’s doorsteps and ensure that 80 percent to 90 percent of the healthcare burdens of communities are addressed promptly.

“We will have a digital clocking system for the PHC centres, which will be viewed in my office here, to let us know when and how many staff report to work on the spot each day,” she added.
