Brian Brobbey netted a dramatic 90th-minute winner as Sunderland staged a superb comeback to defeat Newcastle 2-1 in a pulsating Tyne-Wear derby at St James’ Park on Sunday.
Newcastle appeared poised for their first home victory in this fixture since 2010 when Anthony Gordon put the hosts ahead in the ninth minute. Sunderland’s attempt to play out from the back proved costly, as defender Luke O’Nien’s pass was intercepted by Nick Woltemade, who teed up Gordon for his 17th goal of the season.
The Magpies nearly doubled their lead before half-time, with Sven Botman heading against the post from a Lewis Hall cross. Hall was one of five Newcastle players included in Thomas Tuchel’s latest England squad.
However, the visitors drew level 12 minutes into the second half. England call-up Aaron Ramsdale failed to get sufficient distance on a punch, and after the ball was played back into the box, Brobbey chested it towards goal. Despite Dan Burn clearing off the line, Chemsdine Talbi was on hand to smash home the rebound.
Noah Sadiki then had an opportunity to put Sunderland in front but shot straight at Ramsdale. This miss, however, did not prove costly as Brobbey secured the late winner, delighting the travelling support. He converted from close range after Ramsdale saved his initial effort, ensuring Sunderland’s first league double over Newcastle since the 2014-15 season.
