Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen is expected to be discharged from hospital in the coming days after collapsing during Sunday’s international friendly against Ukraine.

The 34-year-old fell to the ground in the 65th minute of the match after appearing to clutch his chest. The fixture was subsequently abandoned.

Denmark national team doctor Morten Boesen provided a positive update on Monday.

“I spoke with Christian this morning and he is doing well,” Boesen said in a statement. “He is with family and in good spirits. The expectation is that he will be discharged soon and can return home.”

The doctor added that the medical team remains in close contact with both players and staff following the incident.

The scare inevitably revived memories of Eriksen’s collapse during Denmark’s opening match of the delayed UEFA Euro 2020 tournament against Finland in Copenhagen in June 2021, when he suffered a cardiac arrest and required life-saving treatment on the pitch.

Following that incident, Eriksen was fitted with an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator and remarkably returned to professional football with Brentford in February 2022 before later continuing his career at Manchester United.

Denmark coach Brian Riemer revealed that Eriksen was conscious as 0he left the field on Sunday.

“Christian Eriksen waved to his team-mates as he left the pitch,” Riemer said. “A few minutes earlier, he had been involved in a challenge and I initially thought that was why he looked distressed, but I was wrong.”

The coach admitted that neither he nor the players were in a position to continue after witnessing the incident.

While medical assessments continue, the positive signs surrounding Eriksen’s condition have brought relief to the football community, which once again rallied around one of the game’s most respected figures.
