The European Union has fined tech giant Google €890 million ($1 billion) for violating competition rules, marking the first penalty issued under the bloc’s Digital Markets Act (DMA).

The European Commission announced the penalty after finding that Google favored its own vertical services—such as shopping, hotel bookings, and transport—over those of competing businesses on Google Search results.

Regulators also determined that the company restricted third-party app developers from offering alternative payment options or cheaper deals to users on the Google Play Store.

The total fine comprises two separate penalties: €460 million ($524.7 million) for search result bias and €430 million ($490 million) for app store restrictions.

European officials emphasized that the penalty reflects the severity and duration of the infractions, aimed at ensuring fair competition for digital businesses across the region.
