Ex-ASUU Chairman Prof Offiong Emerges Calabar Varsity VC

The governing council of University of Calabar, has approved the appointment of Professor Offiong Effanga Offiong as the institution’s 12th vice chancellor for a single term of five years.

The appointment of Offiong, a former chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities of the institution and ex-education commissioner, is effective December 1, 2025.

He will succeed Prof Florence Obi, who has been in office since November 2020.
Offiong, a seasoned academic, distinguished researcher, holds a Bachelor of Science and Doctor of

Philosophy degrees in Chemistry from the University of Calabar.
He has over 30 years of teaching and administrative experience, including serving as Dean of the Faculty of Science and lecturer in the Department of Chemistry.

The new vice chancellor, has over 70 research articles and 1,017 citations to his name.
Offiong said his vision for UNICAL includes expanding international partnerships to enhance research output and impact, improving infrastructure through modernising facilities and investing in cutting-edge technology.
