Late Senator Lawal Yahaya Gumau

Former lawmaker representing Bauchi South Senatorial District, Senator Lawal Yahaya Gumau passed away on Friday night in Abuja.

Senator Gumau died after a brief illness at the age of 57.

The death of the former senator was confirmed by his former aide, Comrade Haruna Usman Muhammad, through a chat with our correspondent on Saturday morning.

LEADERSHIP reports that Senator Gumau first represented the senatorial district in 2018 after winning a by-election following the death of Senator Ali Wakili.

He was later re-elected as senator during the 2019 general elections and served until 2023.

The deceased’s bid to return to the upper legislative chamber was not successful in the 2023 general elections.

Prior to his tenure in the Senate, he had served two consecutive terms in the House of Representatives, representing where he represented Toro Federal Constituency from 2011 to 2018

The late Senator was known for his contributions on legislative advocacy, infrastructure projects for his constituents as well as youth empowerment.

This newspaper learnt that the deceased lawmaker will be buried on Saturday in Abuja.
