Former national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and ex-governor of Bauchi State, Adamu Muazu, has called for peace and an end to hostilities among Nigeria’s ethnic groups, warning that divisions have slowed the nation’s progress.
Muazu made the appeal on Friday in Abuja at a reception to mark the 50th birthday of socialite and philanthropist, Mrs Kafina Ajibola, held at the Armed Forces Mess, Asokoro.
Reflecting on his years in public office, the former PDP chairman said Nigeria once enjoyed strong communal bonds across ethnic and religious lines, lamenting that such convivial cohabitation had degenerated into conflict and mistrust.
“In the past, there were no ethnic or sectarian disputes among our people. We lived happily together, but things have changed now,” he said, “It is the same for us that are out of office. While in the past we could openly confront anyone and tell him our minds, today I am short of words to say to anyone, especially before an audience like this.”
Muazu, who chaired the occasion, recalled how the celebrant’s father, Mr Shimang, influenced his life as his biology teacher at Gindiri Boys College in present-day Plateau State. He praised the teacher’s impact on shaping his interest in science and values that later guided his public service.
In an apparent show of humility, the former governor questioned the obsession with wealth accumulation, arguing that material success should not be the ultimate goal in life.
“If you’re successful, rich, affluent or wealthy, so what?” he asked. “Every morning when you wake up, before leaving your bed, ask yourself how many people you made happy the previous day.”
He urged Mrs Ajibola and her husband to expand their philanthropic works beyond their immediate circle, stressing that true impact lies in service to humanity.
Muazu also announced a donation of N10 million to support the establishment of a non-governmental organisation (NGO) in the celebrant’s name, calling on other guests to subscribe to the cause.
The former PDP chairman commended Mrs Ajibola for her charitable contributions and urged her to “do more for humanity,” describing her as a woman with a good heart who had touched lives positively.
Mrs Ajibola, who turned 50 on September 5, 2025, was celebrated by family, friends, and associates at the colourful event.
