His resignation was conveyed in a six-paragraph letter addressed to the national chairman of the PDP, and dated January 8, 2025.

In the letter titled “Resignation from the People’s Democratic Party”, Bafarawa stated, “I write to formally tender my resignation as a member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). This decision, though deeply personal and difficult, is borne out of my commitment to a new chapter of service that aligns with my vision of uplifting humanity through empowering the youth.”

The former governor, who led Sokoto State between 1999 and 2007, acknowledged the contributions of the PDP to Nigeria’s democracy. “Over the years, I have been honored to be part of the PDP, a platform that has significantly shaped Nigeria’s political landscape and contributed immensely to nation building,” he noted.

Bafarawa explained that his new focus would be on creating opportunities for the youth, whom he described as “the bedrock of our nation’s future.” He added, “I have recently dedicated myself to a new youth movement that seeks to inspire, empower, and transform the lives of our young people.”

To avoid any “potential conflict of interest,” Bafarawa said his focus would now be on fostering innovation and promoting values that build a prosperous future. While appreciating the PDP’s leadership, he wrote, “I remain grateful for the opportunities I have had to contribute to the party and its ideals. I commend the leadership and members for their relentless efforts to promote democracy and good governance in Nigeria.”
