The African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate for AMAC/Bwari Federal Constituency, Hon. Bala Amidu Iyah, has decried the demolition of homes, shops and other structures in Durumi 3 Community, Abuja, calling for a more humane and inclusive approach to urban renewal in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Iyah made the call after visiting the community on the day demolition operations were carried out by authorities, saying his visit was aimed at assessing the situation firsthand and standing in solidarity with affected residents.

The exercise left several residents and business owners counting losses and has reignited concerns over the social and economic impact of ongoing enforcement actions tied to urban development in parts of the FCT.

Many affected persons expressed fears over the destruction of homes and means of livelihood, as well as the absence of adequate consultation before the exercise.

Addressing residents and community stakeholders, Iyah described the increasing wave of demolitions in Abuja as a serious concern that requires urgent dialogue among all stakeholders.

He said while urban planning and infrastructural development remain necessary for a modern capital city, such processes must be carried out in a way that protects the welfare and dignity of citizens.

“The ongoing demolition of homes, shops, and other properties across the Federal Capital Territory has become a matter of great concern for many citizens,” he said.

“It is therefore necessary for all relevant stakeholders to come together and seek lasting solutions that protect the rights, welfare, and livelihoods of the people,” he added.

Iyah stressed the need for stronger cooperation between government agencies, community leaders, and residents to address disputes arising from demolition exercises.

He called for peaceful engagement and sustained dialogue, noting that inclusive consultation remains essential to preventing tensions and achieving sustainable urban development.

The ADC candidate warned that development efforts must not disproportionately affect vulnerable citizens, urging authorities to ensure a balance between urban renewal and humanitarian considerations.

“While development and urban planning are essential for the growth of our city, they must be pursued with fairness, compassion, and respect for the dignity of affected citizens,” he said.

“Through mutual understanding and sincere consultation, we can achieve development that is both inclusive and people-centered,” he added.

Iyah also called on authorities to strengthen communication with communities facing demolition threats, ensuring residents are properly informed and engaged before enforcement actions are taken.

He urged affected residents of Durumi 3 and other communities to remain peaceful while pursuing lawful avenues for redress, expressing optimism that constructive engagement would lead to more balanced and inclusive development outcomes in the FCT.
