The Nigeria Union of Journalists FCT Council is set to kick off the 2026 Press Week, scheduled to hold from Saturday, 16 May to Friday, 22 May 2026.
A statement issued by the chairman, Organising Committee 2026 NUJ FCT Press Week, Obas Esiedesa, Chairman, said it is a lineup of impactful activities aimed at promoting responsible journalism, healthy living, and democratic accountability.
“The annual Press Week is a flagship event of the Council that brings together journalists, policymakers, civil society organisations, media stakeholders, and government officials to discuss issues critical to Nigeria’s democracy and national development.
“This year’s theme is: “2027 Election: Defending Nigeria’s Democracy in the Age of Disinformation.”
The week-long programme is designed to spotlight the vital role of the media in combating misinformation and safeguarding credible electoral processes ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“The highlight of the week will be the Public Lecture and Awards Ceremony taking place at the prestigious Transcorp Hilton Abuja, expected to host over 1,000 participants,” the statement said.
He said the event will feature top dignitaries, including the Governor of Niger State, His Excellency Mohammed Bago, who will chair the lecture, and former Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, who will serve as Co-Chairman.
“Other distinguished guests expected at the event include the Inspector General of Police, special guest of honour, key political figures, media executives, and stakeholders from various sectors.
“Former House of Representatives member, Hon. Ndudi Elumelu, is expected to deliver the keynote address.
“The lecture and awards ceremony will also honour outstanding journalists and notable Nigerians who have distinguished themselves through excellence, professionalism, and contributions to national development.
“As part of its community-focused initiatives, the Council is also partnering with Nizamiye Hospital for a special medical outreach where medical doctors will provide free health checks and consultations for journalists and members.
“The NUJ FCT Council is calling on journalists, stakeholders, and members of the public to actively participate in the week-long activities to strengthen the collective commitment toward ethical journalism, democratic values, and national unity,” the statement added.
Speaking ahead of the event, the Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, Comrade Grace Ike, urged members to turn out in large numbers for all activities, describing the 2026 Press Week as “a week of impact, reflection, celebration, and professional excellence.”
The Council assured participants of a memorable and engaging experience throughout the celebration.
