Newly inaugurated leadership of the FCT-Youth Network (FCT-YN) has called for more inclusion of FCT indigenes in governance.
Leader of the youth network, Hon. Ibrahim Umar Makeri who made the call after being inaugurated as the youth leader said indigenes of the FCT do not have an adequate representation in governance, as most people who emerge are not actually from the FCT.
He said youths of FCT were clamouring for a mayor who is of FCT descent because the indigenous people of the FCT had been grossly marginalised by past administrations.
“We believe that the government is not carrying the indigenes of FCT along in many areas. We are treated like strangers because we do not have a voice and that is why we want a mayor for the FCT,” he said.
Makeri who further noted that the FCT was a combination of four states including Kaduna, Nassarawa, Kogi and Niger further urged the senators representing the areas to also see the FCT as one of theirs to foster development.
The senior special assistant to the FCT minister, Hon. Yamawo Tanko Ishaku, stressed the need for proper legislative representation as according to him, many cases were constitution based.
“They have to elect leaders they know can truly represent them in the legislative because if you look at the issues affecting the FCT, they are more of constitutional issues, which means that the constitution needs to be amended. So, we need those who would be out there to speak on behalf of the people and ask for amendments,” he said.
The FCT director of Gida Gida Movement for Tinubu and Shetima, Haj. Aisha Baiyee, assured the original inhabitants of the FCT of the corporation of government, noting that the minister was working to ensure that indigenes were not neglected.
