In a move to combat air pollution, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCAT), through the Health Services and Environment Secretariat (FCT) was mobilising young people, especially students in secondary and tertiary institutions, to take the lead in protecting the environment for future generations
The initiative, championed by the FCT Health Services and Environment Secretariat, aimed to harness the energy and influence of young people to drive behavioural change and promote sustainable practices.
The mandate secretary, Dr Dolapo Fasawe, at the campaign’s launch, said: “We recognise the critical role of young people as agents of change, especially on issues that affect our planet
“Their passion is infectious, and their voices are powerful. By empowering them, we are not just protecting today, but securing tomorrow.”
The campaign is a collaborative effort, partnering with Rotaract Clubs across the city, including Abuja Maitama, Apo FCT, and Abuja Wuse II.
These young Rotaractors will be at the forefront of the outreach, visiting campuses and schools to educate their peers.
Ms Daniella Olayinka, a behavioural advocate and Rotaractor convening the initiative, expressed the youth’s readiness to lead.
“We are not just the leaders of tomorrow; we are the change-makers of today. Our focus is on actionable steps, tree planting, carpooling, switching to clean cooking gas, and stopping the open burning of refuse.
“We are ready to work with the FCTA to spread this message and inspire a movement,” she said.
The campaign will employ creative and interactive strategies to engage students, including competitions, debates, talent hunts, and social media challenges.
Environmental clubs will be established to sustain the momentum, with incentives and prizes offered to outstanding participants.
A central pillar of the awareness drive is the upcoming “Breathe Clean Air Abuja” project, a flagship public-private partnership set for launch on November 13.
The project aims to replace traditional, polluting firewood stoves with clean gas stoves in over 5,000 households across the FCT’s six area councils.
Under the theme “Renewing Hope, One Household at a Time,” the FCTA’s comprehensive strategy signals a firm commitment to building a more sustainable capital, proving that the battle for clean air is one they intend to win with the next generation leading the charge.
