The Federal Government of Nigeria has approved the installation of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology and an anti-doping laboratory at the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja.

The National Sports Commission (NSC) announced this decision via its official X (formerly Twitter) account on Wednesday, describing it as part of a comprehensive nationwide overhaul of sports infrastructure. The NSC aims to reposition Nigerian sports and elevate key facilities to international standards.

In addition to the VAR and anti-doping lab, the approved projects include upgrades to running tracks, floodlights, and both media and athlete facilities. Plans also encompass the construction of a High-Performance Centre and new training pitches, the redevelopment of the 200-room athletes’ hostel into a proper hotel, and enhanced medical facilities equipped with the latest technology. Furthermore, a new sports centre will provide additional office and event space for all sports federations.

This initiative will also extend direct support to states hosting future National Sports Festivals, promote the development of elite sports facilities across the nation, and facilitate the construction of mini sports centres within local communities.

Additionally, the government intends to establish sports facilities within selected tertiary institutions as part of a broader initiative to create centres of excellence. This strategy aims to bolster grassroots and school-level sports development.

The NSC described this first phase of investment as “unprecedented,” emphasising its intent to position sports as a catalyst for youth empowerment, economic growth, talent development, and national unity.
