Oyo State governor, Seyi Makinde, has expressed solidarity with families of schoolchildren and teachers abducted in the state, assuring that government and security agencies are working toward securing their safe return.

The governor spoke in a message marking this year’s dual observance of Eid-el-Kabir and National Children’s Day, saying his thoughts were with affected families enduring what he described as a painful period of uncertainty.

The incident occurred nearly two weeks ago, when armed men attacked three schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State on May 15, abducting dozens of pupils, including toddlers, as well as several teachers. The attack also left one teacher, Adesiyan Adegboye, dead, while another, Michael Oyedokun, was reportedly beheaded in captivity, triggering widespread outrage and renewed calls for urgent rescue operations.

In a post on his official X account on Wednesday, Makinde acknowledged the emotional weight of the day for affected families.

“As we mark this year’s Eid and Children’s Day, our thoughts are with every family awaiting the return of their loved ones, and with security agencies working to keep our communities safe,” he wrote.

Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to resolving the crisis, the governor added, “We are working to ensure the safe return of those who were kidnapped in Oriire Local Government Area. May this holy season fill our state with peace.”

Makinde’s remarks come amid reports that suspected attackers have opened communication channels with the state government. However, it remains unclear whether any engagement is being conducted directly by the governor or through intermediaries acting on behalf of the administration.

Authorities have not officially confirmed the structure or status of any negotiations.

The developments have added a layer of uncertainty to an already tense situation, as families continue to await updates on the fate of their abducted children and teachers.

May 27 is observed annually in Nigeria as Children’s Day, a national occasion dedicated to celebrating children and promoting their welfare, education, and protection. This year’s observance coincided with Eid-el-Kabir, creating a rare overlap between a major Islamic festival and a national day of reflection on children’s rights and safety.
