The Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr. Bernard Doro, has revealed that the Federal Government has successfully identified the poorest households in Nigeria through the ministry’s social register.
Speaking on Arise Television’s ‘The Morning Show’ on Friday, Doro explained that the identification process relied heavily on communities to determine the most vulnerable. He stressed that not all poor Nigerians were captured on the register, which specifically targets the “poorest of the poor.”
According to the minister, the social register currently includes 17.9 million vulnerable households, representing approximately 70 million Nigerians.
“The register is a product of community engagement. We rely on communities, using socio-economic criteria, to identify those most in need,” Doro said.
He added that communities play a crucial role in guiding the ministry to ensure that assistance reaches the truly needy, based on established criteria for poverty and vulnerability.
