The federal government has reaffirmed its commitment to transforming the Nigerian Army University Biu (NAUB) into a leading institution for specialised military and civilian education, with plans to address critical infrastructure gaps, including the establishment of what is expected to be Africa’s first Centre for Military Performance Management.

The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), disclosed this on Saturday while receiving the university’s Governing Council at the Ministry of Defence Headquarters in Abuja.

General Musa said the university remains central to building the technical and operational capacity needed to tackle Nigeria’s evolving security challenges, pledging sustained strategic support for the institution.

He also revealed that the Ministry of Defence would collaborate with the Armed Forces of Nigeria to maximise the 30 per cent admission quota reserved for military personnel, describing the move as part of efforts to close specialised skills gaps across the country’s security sector.

“As the federal government pushes for a highly skilled workforce in this digital era, we must encourage members of the Armed Forces, ministry staff, and the general public to leverage the cutting-edge technological and academic solutions available at NAUB,” the minister said.

According to him, the initiative aligns with the government’s drive to equip security personnel with the expertise required to respond effectively to increasingly complex security threats.

A major outcome of the meeting was a joint commitment by the Ministry of Defence and the university’s Governing Council to urgently improve infrastructure at the institution.

Among the proposed projects is the construction of a state-of-the-art Centre for Military Performance Management, which the ministry said would be the first of its kind on the African continent.

Earlier, the leader of the delegation and pioneer pro-chancellor of the Nigerian Army University Biu, Lt. Gen. Tukur Yusuf Buratai (Rtd), commended the minister’s leadership and strategic direction, saying his contributions had continued to strengthen Nigeria’s defence architecture.

Buratai also expressed appreciation for Musa’s commitment to the Armed Forces and national development.

He reaffirmed the university’s commitment to promoting academic excellence, research and national service in support of Nigeria’s defence and security objectives.
