The Federal Government has officially commenced the restoration of the Voice of Nigeria’s (VON) shortwave transmission, marking a significant milestone in the revitalisation of Nigeria’s broadcasting infrastructure.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, flagged off the restoration contract for the 250KW TX2 shortwave transmitter at VON’s Lugbe transmitting station in Abuja on Monday.
The Minister was represented by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mr. Ogbodo Chinasa Nnam.
Describing the project as a “significant moment in the history of the Voice of Nigeria,” the Minister highlighted the strategic importance of the restoration, noting that the Lugbe facility is “the largest and most powerful transmitting station on the African continent,” now set to be equipped with modern, digitally compatible technology.
Idris commended President Bola Tinubu for his leadership and commitment to modernising Nigeria’s broadcasting systems.
“As we take this giant step to flag off the contract for the restoration of Voice of Nigeria’s shortwave transmission, it is appropriate to express our profound appreciation to President Bola Tinubu, for his vision and commitment,” he said.
According to the Minister, the restored transmitter will play a critical role in reshaping Nigeria’s media reach, not just within the country but across the continent and beyond.
“Upon completion, the fully reactivated VON transmitters will transform the landscape of terrestrial broadcasting and position VON as a respected brand in global radio broadcasting for good,” he added.
Idris also urged the contractor to deliver the project within the stipulated timeline and adhere strictly to quality standards.
“I therefore urge the contractor to not only execute the contract within the agreed timeline but also to ensure that the highest standards and quality are maintained and clearly evident,” he said.
In addition, the VON technical team was charged with diligently overseeing the execution of the project to ensure its success.
The Minister reaffirmed the government’s expectation that VON will continue to project Nigeria’s image positively, staying true to its pro-Nigeria and pan-African editorial stance.
“It is now my honour to formally flag off the contract for the restoration of Voice of Nigeria’s shortwave transmission using the 250KW superpower transmitter,” the Minister added.
